Error Reporting

Post by Nightma12 »

What do you think should be done about NR error reporting?

old versions of NR used to crash completely when an error was found, but the recent versions output it ingame. However, due to a high volume of errors that are on the latest version (which i am trying to track down) it is getting exetrmely annoying to people ingame.

I am going to release 7e to patch the error reporting to report somewhere else. Where do you think NR should report errors to?

at the moment it reports it ingame, IRC + admin chan, as well as to debug.txt

What i am thinking is perhaps a message to the NR console saying that there was an error, and to check debug.txt for more information - or perhaps output it to IRC Admin channel?

Tell me your views :)

I'd say a generic console/admin irc message. Then dump the details into a text file.

So if NR produces 20 errors in a 2 minute period, the host/admin would only see one error and would then go to the debug.txt or whatever to find out what exactly happened each of the 20 times. Users and mods (and sometimes even admins) do not need to see the errors. Only the top admins or server hosts need to.

If you're only outputting a generic message (and only one time per series of errors). If it outputs to those locations for EVERY error, then you really haven't solved much. When you have a system error it says "blah blah has reported an error - check the application log". Then you check the log for details. NR should follow suit and output a generic message which reports the details of the errors in a text document such as debug.txt.
