I'm sure we COULD :D
I don't mind those new maps once in a while, but some are just bad...
I think we did have a problem with them, some admin or someone can confirm, but I think one of the bigger issues was making sure people had them?

well we've always been concerned with people being forced out if they didn't have the maps (especially since most people only get them through RG, which we don't support)

with renegade.tsugaming.com up, perhaps we can reopen this idea if you can provide a detailed list of possible maps, and provide a mappack from there

I've been really busy since the idea to propose the change to the rotation was made last time. Seeing as it's the weekend now, I'll try to make the rotation changes tonight.

If my admins want to add non_flying maps to the rotation that is O.K. with me.

But adding maps that aren't default (Sand, Siege, Field_TS, etc) cause a lot of problems and tend to empty out the server more than fill it. People like nonstandard maps, no doubt, but only once and while.

Let's wait for a map pack before we even consider adding NEW maps to the rotation. Standard maps like Hourglass, City (non flying), and Walls (non flying) are O.K. with me if you want to re-add them.

Yeah we already decided we were going to add non flying maps and then rejig the rotation a few weeks back, but I was the only admin here and then I had a run of important exams and coursework deadlines, and the map rotation issue completely slipped my mind.

In regards to the rotation:

I'd recommend creating a list like this:
map1
map2
map3
map4
map5
map4
map3
map1
map5
map2
map1
map5
map2
map4
map3

So that it appears to be more 'random'. Basically take the list, make 2 or 3 copies of it, randomize each set, then put them all together as one long list. And then make maps that people don't like (like hourglass, glacier_flying, under) only show up 1-2 times rather than 3. You get the idea.

I was going to incorporate something like that, but also I want to make sure that we don't have a bunch of long, base defense maps in a row.

For an idea for if we added in those new maps... Flood says people like them once in a while, so make a rotation that has say each map in it twice, but Snow or something like that in it once... you know? ;)

We're not going to be using new maps, at least not now, we've seen in the past that it just empties the server.

Last time I tried to play fan maps, my computer completely crashed and it caused a lot of issues for me. -_-

Most people are not going to bother to download new maps, install them, and reload renegade and join back IMO.

Same. My computer doesn't like fan maps for some reason. I'm wondering if its my scripts.dll.

OK, I've changed the rotation and added some maps.

To keep things simple, here is a summary of what was changed:
  • The map list was duplicated 4 times so that each map list is actually 4 unique rotations all added as one long rotation -- giving the illusion that the maps are "random" (will be much more random)
  • Popular maps were listed in the rotation 4 times, while not so popular maps were only included 1-2 times.
  • New STANDARD maps were added: City(2x), Walls(2x), Hourglass(2x), Glacier_Flying(2x)
  • New NON-STANDARD map was added: Siege(1x)
  • Map list was designed to contstantly rotate between base defense maps and non base defense maps
  • Very popular maps were kept as close in the rotation to not-too-popular maps as possible, without putting them right next to eachother so that players would skip a map or two either by vote or leaving
There is no perfect way to do this, but I think I've got a pretty good rotation going.

The only MAJOR issue I could see is with people who don't have Siege or have problems running Siege. Which is why it is only listed one time (in a list of about 40 maps).

Let me know if you notice any problems, have any comments, have any suggestions, etc. on the new rotation.

Enjoy!
